In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes, a hard line government official will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. It's a shame then how, after Blomkamp emerges you fully in both the story and its setting, the film's final act turns into a clone of almost every other summer movie of recent years. The irony is, anyone expecting a slam-bang dumb action flick will likely be turned off by 'Elysium's political allegory and heavy use of subtitles long before the climax, which will equally irritate those who were on board with Blomkamp's thoughtful sci-fi set-up. 'Elysium' starts off as an intelligent and immersive piece of hard sci-fi but sadly climaxes with yet another expensive wrestling match between men in metal suits. It's by no means a bad film, but a serious missed opportunity to inject some brains into the summer blockbuster season.
